The Rapid Adaptive Variance indicator measures the strength of a prevailing trend, but does not, however, imply the trend direction. Rising RAVI indicates the beginning of a trend or an increase in the trend's strength, while a falling RAVI indicates the end of a trend or a deterioration of the trend's strength.

The RAVI indicator attempts to improve on the Average Directional Index (ADX) and is claimed by the author to respond faster and more predictably to price fluctuations than the ADX.
